Master’s eligibility requirements: English proficiency

To be eligible for the master’s program, you need to submit proof that your proficiency in English equals at least a B2 level, as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), or proof of equivalent proficiency in English. In order to establish that you meet this requirement, the proof must either explicitly state that your English proficiency is equal to at least a B2 CEFR level, or should at least be verifiable (such as for internationally recognized language tests). Examples of valid or non-valid language proof are listed in the table below.

Examples of valid language proof
University entrance qualification, e.g. German Abitur, with explicit proof of at least B2 English proficiency (i.e. the certificate that you will upload in the online application form needs to explicitly state the CEFR level)
Official school statement that your program for university entrance qualification was exclusively taught in English
Official university statement that your undergraduate program was exclusively taught in English
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with an overall band score of at least 5.5
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), including the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition, with a total score of at least 72
B2 First Cambridge Certificate in English with an overall scale of at least 160
Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)
Duolingo English Test with a total score of at least 100
Michigan English Test (MET), Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English (ECCE) or Examination for the Certificate of Profiency in English (ECPE)
Telc English certificate with proof of at least B2 CEFR English proficiency
Examples of non-valid language proof
Online “examinations” that were conducted without online proctoring and without ID check (i.e. without validation that the person who took the exam is the person who is subsequently listed on the exam certificate), for example the EF-SET test.
Having written a bachelor’s thesis in English
Having taken some university classes in English
Having taken part in a university exchange such as Erasmus

Proof of your proficiency in German is not required for your application to the master’s program. However, basic knowledge of German is helpful for living and cultural exchange.

Finally, please note that you need to upload the proof of your English proficiency at the latest by February 28, 2025. According to the admission regulations, any information submitted after the application deadline cannot be considered.
