Genome Stability, Cancer Chemotherapy Resistance students/research assistants/postdocs in south Korea

at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) ( in Ulsan, South Korea, invites applications for Postdocs, Research Assistants, and Ph.D. students interested in DNA repair and DNA Damage Signaling, Cancer, Chromosome Biology and Bioinformatics.

The Korean IBS, which was founded ~10 years ago and is currently composed of ~30 research centers, is modeled on the Max Planck system and has access to the most generous core funding. Genetic and Genomic Toxicology Branch (GGTB) directed by Anton Gartner Our lab has more than 20 years of track record in studying chromosome biology, apoptosis, and DNA damage responses. We are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment including high-end microscopy, local access to next-generation sequencing, a COPAS worm sorter, a spinning disc microscope, and a custom-built cell lineaging setup. One Postdoc position in the Mechanisms of Chemotherapy Resistance team led by Dmitry Ivanov. Using an isogenic set of human cell lines, we investigate how the inactivation of DNA repair pathways sensitizes cells to the alkylating agent temozolomide (TMZ), which is used to treat glioblastoma. Surprisingly, the most TMZ-sensitive lines, that we identified so far, are knockouts of Fanconi Anemia genes. You will be in charge of setting up CRISPR-based screens to identify the genes involved in resistance to chemotherapy agents and in follow-up cell biology study of the mechanisms involved. Another major goal of our research is to understand the origin of mutational signatures observed in cancers. We are building on our previous experience in the analysis of C. elegans genomes (Nat. Commun. and translating it to the study of human cell lines. Candidates with a recent Ph.D. are particularly invited to apply.

Ph.D. student, Research Assistant (M.Sc.), and Postdoc positions in the two C. elegans teams. Experience in molecular biology, genetics, or cell biology is required for Research Assistant and Postdoc applicants. Previous experience with C. elegans is a plus, but not essential.
DNA Damage and Stress Response team led by Anton Gartner focuses on apoptosis regulation during somatic development and in the germ line, the identification and characterization of new DNA damage response genes, and on organismal signaling pathways required for DNA damage tolerance.
The Fail-Safe Mechanisms of Genome Maintenance team led by Stephane Rolland focuses on the maintenance of genome stability during mitosis and on the link between mitochondrial genome maintenance and neurodegeneration.

Our lab provides an outstanding platform for Postdocs to develop their own ideas and projects if related to our core interests. Employment for Junior Postdocs is for up to 3+5 years, Senior Postdocs can be employed for up to 5 years, with a possibility of promotion.
