ABOUT LSM

The Graduate School Life Science Munich (LSM) offers an international doctoral programme to highly
motivated and academically qualified next generation researchers at one of Europe´s top universities.

Members of the Graduate School are part of the Faculty of Biology or the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) München, based at the HighTechCampus in Planegg-Martinsried, south of Munich. Over 40 participating research groups, internationally renowned for their innovative approaches of research, employ state-of-the-art technologies to answer fundamental questions relevant to basic and applied sciences from Molecules to Systems.

Students benefit from the quality of research and teaching at the LMU, while living in a vibrant city. Located close to the Alps, Munich is well-known for its wealth of recreational and cultural activities.

WHAT LSM OFFERS

Research at LSM covers the areas of Anthropology and Human Biology, Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, Cell and Developmental Biology, Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Plant Sciences, Systematic Botany/Mycology, Synthetic Biology and Zoology.

The purpose of the programme is to teach not only the technical expertise necessary for success in research, but also impart skills that are indispensable for every thoughtful and responsible scientist. The latter include the ability to communicate in simple language, and a willingness to engage with bioethical issues and participate in the public discourses they may provoke. Additionally, in-house German language courses including intercultural aspects are offered on campus for international students to facilitate integration.

Research activities are complemented by lectures, seminarsand workshops. The entire curriculum is taught in English.

WHAT LSM EXPECTS

The doctoral programme is open to outstanding students, who hold either a bachelor’s degree with honors or a master’s degree in Natural or Life Sciences and related subjects. A strong scientific motivation and a keen interest in the activities of the doctoral programme are expected of all candidates.

ACADEMIC AWARD

Upon successful completion of their graduate studies students are awarded their doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) by LMU, after approximately three years. Jointly, with the LMU Doctor’s degree, the LSM issues a Doctor’s certificate, a bilingual Transcript of records and Diploma supplement in English. This includes 180 ECTS points, that are Bologna compatible.

LSM STUDENT COUNCIL

The role of the student council is to give a collective voice that facilitates communication between doctoral candidates and the graduate school. Their input is fundamental in keeping the LSM curriculum scientifically innovative and socially active. Doctoral candidates are welcome to invite keynote speakers from their areas of research and support us during events held by the programme and faculty. Additionally, our graduates release a biannual newsletter and have accumulated tips for incoming students in a guide called the Jungle Book, used throughout the campus.
